Date: 11/07/2023

Whether you’re a recent college graduate looking for your first full-time job, or an experienced professional ready to take the next step in your career, the job search process can be intimidating if you’re not prepared. Jenel S. and Sam C. are Fisher Investments recruiters who help fill entry-level and professional positions at the firm. They are the initial point of contact for many candidates and know firsthand what makes someone standout. Their tips can help you make a positive impression so you can interview with confidence and land a great job!

Proof Your Resume

Misspellings, typos, and inconsistent formatting on resumes are blunders that candidates sometimes make. “These are big setbacks early on in the application process that are easy to fix and can be avoided,” Sam says. He recommends you have people you trust review your resume before sending it out to a potential employer.

Know Your Qualifications

It’s important to have a good understanding of your resume and background. “You want to be able to present your qualifications without reading directly from your resume during an interview,” says Jenel. She also recommends that you practice with behavioral-based questions so you can quickly align your skills with your experience. An example of a question she likes to ask candidates is, “Tell me about a time when you were able to exceed expectations in your job/internship.”

Practice Interviewing

Interviewing is a skill that requires practice. “You don’t want the interview for your dream job to be your first at bat," says Sam. “If you come polished, it will make a huge difference.” Mock interviews with your career center, friends, or family can help build your confidence and interviewing capabilities.

Make an Impression

Jenel shares that a good interview is one where “candidates are engaged throughout call, show interest, ask questions, and provide qualifications that align to that role.” She also says, “I love it when candidates come prepared with questions so I can share my personal experiences and information about the firm.”

Do Your Research

It is essential that you do your research on the company and position that you are applying for so you can share your knowledge and ask engaging questions. “Being able to relate your background and skills to the role you applied for is the cherry on top,” says Sam. “Doing so demonstrates that you put strong effort into preparation.”

Share Your Story

Jenel loves it when candidates use the STAR method during an interview when telling a story. This interview method can be effective in helping you prepare responses using real-life examples. “Presenting a specific skill using a clear Situation, Task, Action, and Result can impact a candidate’s potential for the position.”

These Fisher Investments recruiters have a clear message for job candidates: Setting yourself up for success starts before the interview! By polishing your resume, proactively doing research, and practicing your interview skills, you can help yourself stand out and take steps toward getting your next role.
